What is behind Trump’s animosity against Iran?

Trump’s friends include a lot of Jewish real estate investors and his advisors include a lot of hard line American Jews who see Iran as an existential threat to Israel. Among Republicans, there are a lot who see themselves as staunch supporters of Israel. His base includes the evangelical Christians, who are very much part of Trump’s base, are in some ways stronger in their support of Israel than the American Jewish community. Evangelicals believe that Christ will come again only when all the Jews are gathered in the Holy Land. They see Israel as that gathering of the Jews in the Holy Land and they want to facilitate its acceleration in so that Christ will come more quickly. They are big donors to and supporters of Israel in Washington. It comes from the fundamentalist Christians who know the Old Testament (which is essentially the same as the Torah) better than most Jews who mostly don’t read their holy books.
