“Original and practical book on a vital topic which no one has looked at in depth before; simple and clear to read, with lots of real world case examples; it escapes the normal orthodoxy where globalisation means spreading western practice.”
This is what i reply to my friend Jo Owen, when he asked me, before the publication, to read “Global Teams”, his last book, and give him my opinion.
Based on original research with some of the world’s leading companies, Global Teams is the definitive, practical guide on making the sharp end of globalisation work for you and your organisation.
Now my opinion is in the cover of his book, and inside you can find other quotes of mine:
“The Chinese worry about different things. Italian’s worry about the downside, the Chinese don’t understand why you worry about downside. Do you think you are going to fail? They only think about success.”
“Europe still thinks it is the centre of the civilised world. The Americans think that they still have global hegemony. While the Chinese think that they are the centre of the world. The Chinese are now extremely arrogant and think that they can buy anything: they think they can buy the Colosseum in Rome.”
“To be credible you have to have global perspective: that means Europe, America and Asia. So I read the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and South China Morning Post every day. You have to know what turns people on and off, what you can and cannot say and do, when to buy a gift and when not, when to invite people to dinner: it boils down to 100 specific behaviours that you must adopt. If you do not have global perspective you are not globally credible. Above all, that means you need humility.”
“Italians are too direct and offensive; the Chinese do not want to offend you so they will not tell you the truth.”
