Now that you know what to study, have you asked yourself where to enroll? Distance from home, cost, family, friends, and fun are certainly factors to weigh to make a good choice, but most important is the fact that you are going to study. This is how the big theme of educational quality at universities presents itself, served up on a silver platter. Rankings of Italian universities are published every year; you can use them to get an idea about which indicators are closest to your heart.
You should also consider the possibility of studying abroad, provided that you choose an internationally recognized subject, because studying far away from home simply to say that you did doesn’t give your diploma any added value. Rather, it risks complicating your subsequent job search, because foreign degrees are not always recognized by the Italian system.
You also need to know that according to the principle ranking systems, Italian universities make an average impression on a global level. As you can see in the following tables, they’re scarce in the lists and only in some subsections, but in relevant positions.
A brief consideration: if you decide to look for employment abroad, remember to be very careful when you’re dealing with job offers: bachelor in electronic, Java software developer, mechanical engineer, and so on. You frequently only need to translate your degree title and you’re done: the title provides the only real connection to a job. For others, instead, the requisites listed in the job ad are totally different from what you experienced during your education. In that case, you can kiss the legal validity of your diploma goodbye, because only the amount that you studied and your skills, more than your academic title, will matter. So, good, you have a degree, but don’t think that you’ve also obtained the right to a job or to one that’s pertinent to your course of study. It’s just the beginning of the fight.
Remember
- Each degree is associated with different work expectations. You need to understand what it does for you, there is no right or wrong answer.
- Choosing a university is the result of evaluating the skills that you want to acquire and the job that you want.
Did you know? The majority of employers are dissatisfied with the level of competency and abilities of their own workforces.
